What Is Chalk Paint?
Chalk paint is generally a latex-based paint that also contains a fine granular powder. When the paint dries, these granules will help to create a superior matte finish to your project.
Your piece of furniture doesn’t even need to be perfect before painting as the roughness can add to the overall charm. Your brush strokes and mistakes will also add to the look, making this an easy paint to use by anyone. Never use a professional painter again.
Many versions of the paint will also feature a soft wax included. This helps to seal the paint and give that overall matte finish as well. Some people choose to leave it the way it is after painted because they enjoyed the distressed look.
Otherwise, there has been a lot of success with sanding the surface after painting to expose a small amount of wood. Others will take the modern road and cover the chalky paint with a light coating of regular matte paint.
Keep in mind that the original chalk paint was first produced by Annie Sloan, and she has since added a copyright to the term.
If you want to find other brands that make a less-expensive and just as a high-quality product, you’ll want to look for variations of the name. Many of these will include chalked paint or chalky paint.
When you use chalk paint, be sure to think outside the box. This paint is great for things other than just furniture and cabinets.
In fact, I think it makes for some of the best paint for wood crafts as well.
Why Is It Good For Restoring
Furniture & Cabinets?
The main reason people tend to think that chalk paint is the best paint for furniture is due to the appearance it gives.
With very little effort, you can easily achieve a distressed and vintage look to your furniture and cabinets. In fact, I haven’t seen another type of paint that creates the look quite like chalk paint does.
Chalk paint also allows for minimal prepping before you start. There is no sanding required on your projects, you can paint directly over any imperfections.
They will become part of the masterpiece when it is finished. In addition, you don’t need any primer to get started. Simply grab your furniture and paint.
Chalk paint is versatile and can be used on many surfaces.
The most common applications are on wood, glass, ceramic, metal and plastic. I’ve even seen some amazing work on wood paneling with chalk-type paints.
Chalk paints tend to be low in odor and easy to clean up. Generally, some soap and water will do the trick.
Finally, chalk paint allows you to get a little more creative. Consider that old, beat up piece of furniture you see at the local yard sale.
You may think it isn’t worth the cost, but with chalk paint, that piece of furniture can become your playground.
You can vary different colors and techniques to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
What Prep Do I Need Before Painting With Chalk Paint?
As mentioned previously, one of the reasons that chalk paint is the best furniture paint is because of the low amount of prep work needed. You could literally begin painting with no prep work at all if you chose to.
For some of you, there might be some steps that you’ll want to take prior to painting. Many of these are just common sense steps and others are optional.
- 1Start by identifying a practical place to paint. You won’t want to do it close to any other items that shouldn’t be painted. You’ll also want proper ventilation.
- 2Remove any elements of the furniture that shouldn’t be painted. This would include drawers, shelves, and any hardware. Do yourself a favor and place these items together where they won’t get lost.
- 3If you find rough patches that you don’t want to use as part of the distressed look, go ahead and sand. Just remember, you don’t need to sand the entire piece, even if it’s varnished.
- 4If you have sticky materials stuck to the furniture, use some soap or water to remove it. One of my favorite products to use is Goo Gone.
- 5Fill any holes on your project with wood glue. Gorilla Glue makes a superior formula for this type of task
- 6Even if your furniture seems to be clean, you could still have gotten oils on it from your hands. Use some warm, soapy water with a mild dish soap to give it a quick cleaning. Just be sure you wipe away all the soap thoroughly. You also want to make sure it is completely dry before you begin painting.
- 7Make sure you use painter’s tape to mark off any sections of the furniture you don’t want to be painted. Make sure you use it inside the drawers.
- 8Use a brush, roller or better still a paint sprayer to get the job done.
What Are The Negatives To Using Chalk Paint?
While many people love the results that they receive from using chalk paint, it isn’t for everyone. Here are a few reasons that people avoid chalk paint.
The first reason people tend to avoid using chalk paint is the cost is higher. Even if you aren’t purchasing the top of the line brands of chalk paint, it will still run you more per quart than a typical latex paint will. For those on a budget, this isn’t always the best option.
Others choose to avoid chalk paint because they don’t prefer the vintage look on their furniture. Some people also find that if they just want a slightly distressed look, they can achieve that with regular latex paint and a little extra effort. Obviously, these are all personal preferences.
While the effort is lower when using chalk paint, you may still want to consider waxing it when finished. Without a wax, the durability of chalk paint doesn’t always impress me.
For example, if you spill juice on an unwaxed piece of furniture that used chalk paint, that stain will absorb into your paint.
Thankfully, waxing the furniture doesn’t add much time to the overall project and it helps to give a polished, finished look.

You wouldn’t automatically think of this brand when looking for a chalk paint, but you might want to. Since 1921, Rust-Oleum has been a leader in coming up with innovative solutions. In fact, the brand started because sea captain Robert Fergusson didn’t want his ship to come apart.

Chalk Paint Buying Guide
Before you decide which chalk paint is right for your project, there are some things you’ll want to take into consideration.
Your first step will be deciding how much paint you are going to need. Many of the well-known brands will tell you right on the labels how much coverage you can expect. That makes it much easier to determine how many containers you should purchase.
Next, you’ll want to pick the color. Most of the well-known brands also offer a slew of incredible colors to choose from. It might be harder narrowing it down than you thought!
Remember, you could always purchase a smaller container if they offer it to test the color on the furniture before committing to the larger size.
You’ll also want to determine what other products you might need to go with the chalk paint. For example, I’ve always believed that you should use a particular brush when you are using chalk paint and wax.
I prefer this Brossum 2-in-1 Round Chalk Paint and Wax Brush but you might find a different brand that you prefer.
Make sure you also keep the price as a variable when choosing your chalk paint. Just because the paint has a higher price tag and claims to be the best, doesn’t mean it is.
Be sure you read reviews from the customers who have actually used the paint and can vouch for the overall quality. You don’t want a paint that isn’t going to stand up to the abuse you throw at it.
